I've had several conversations with friends and fellow travellers about the so called airport style. What are you suppose to wear? Some say you should wear as you would go to work or school, some say the comfort is the only thing that matters. There are so many opinions whether you should be all glammed up or go as comfortable as you can. Then there are people in between. But I need to admit, I mostly met people from the extreme hands.
Those who have been travelling with me or have stalked my ''I'm so bored at the airport, 6 hours to go'' snapchat stories, might already know that my go-to outfit is something comfortable, but yet I try (I really do!) to make it at least slightly stylish at the same time. Especially on the inbound flight. The flights back to home are a completely other story (aka I mostly look like a bummer)
Anyways, I decided to list a few typical airport style types I've come across. These are by no means, nothing serious and if you can't recognize one of those living in you, then let me know on the comments what's up.
I'd say I am a half hobo, no shame! The airport hobos invest in comfort, which is rather understandable if you are planning on taking 5 flights and 10 buses in the following two days of time. Therefore this style is very common among backpackers. The secret of mastering the hobo style is wearing sports leggings or sweatpants, messy bun and oversized t-shirt coming out of your brother's old hoodie. The cherry on a pie are the flip flops - which are there to tell people that you are ready for some beach action. If you aim to go with this style, go ahead, just don't forget to take care of your hygiene and not to torture others with smelly feet on the airplane.
I'd like to include myself in this category. This seems to be one of the most popular ones. And probably the most convenient one as well. You won't be sacrificing your looks but you still feel comfortable. Travellers in this category tend to throw on some nice leggings and then wear something like a loose dress over it and then wear some nice kicks to spice up the outfit. I usually go with this one, because come on, who want's to wear skinny jeans on a 13-hour flight? - Not me!
Yes, I get that when you travel for business, you need to be on fleek so to say and wear your best. I have so much respect for those ladies who run around the airport wearing 15cm heels and pencil skirts, that's some talent there. How do you do that? I find it difficult to even run with sneakers while rolling my cabin bag with me and trying not to hit anyone with it.
Despite the blisters, it's also forbidden to wear high heels on the plane due to safety reasons, it seems like a nightmare trying to walk out of a burning airplane with heels - or barefoot on top of broken glass among other sharp objects. You can look professional and fancy without heels as well, just grab your ballerinas and have your high heels in your bag with you.
Even if you want to dress up and wear your best without any particular reason, I congratulate you for maintaining the reputation of aviation as a glamorous and luxurious way of transporting.
Oh boy, this is the sight you can't avoid at the airports. Usually, this category is dominated by middle-aged daddy figures. If you see one in Europe, he is most likely on a family holiday, on their way to Tenerife or Bulgaria Sunny Beach. The usual look is a Hawaii shirt, knee-length khaki shorts and sandals. If you want to be extra daring, you could always spice things up with some tennis socks and belt pouch, but only if you are a true tourist daddy.
Layers, layers, layers. This person might have just finished her Italian getaway and ended up shopping way too many pairs of shoes or maybe she went to Morocco and fell in love with a few too many textiles and now she is not willing to pay for extra fees of the overweight baggage. After 10 minutes of pulling a puppy face and after a few tears at the check-in desk, she decides to wear the extra 4 kilos of clothes she bought. We all hope she had an extra bag or a plastic bag so she won't get a heatstroke for wearing her whole closet on her. But hey layers were in fashion, like 2 years ago, right?
